How to Calculate Euler Buckling Load

1. Define E and the buckling-axis I

Use Young's modulus for the material and the centroidal second moment of area about the axis in which buckling is being evaluated.

2. Define actual length L and effective length factor K

The current calculator requires K to be supplied by the user. It does not infer restraint conditions or select K automatically.

3. Calculate effective length

Effective length is Le = KL. This is the length used in the verified Euler elastic critical-load equation.

4. Calculate the ideal Euler elastic critical load

Evaluate Pcr = π²EI/(KL)² after converting inputs to a consistent unit system.

5. Optional Euler buckling stress

When cross-sectional area A is supplied, divide the ideal Euler elastic critical load by A to obtain Euler buckling stress.

6. Interpret the result correctly

Euler buckling is an ideal elastic model. The calculated critical load is not a design capacity and does not replace material, imperfection, interaction, stability, or code-design checks.
